A little bit about me

Over the past 15+ years, I have had the privilege of working for one of the largest media companies in Canada with Astral and Bell Media. I have also experienced working ass a leader at tech startups, running my own full time business, and building successful digital departments with established agencies.

I build relationships with clients and departments through a genuine excitement of the work we’re doing, and what we can accomplish together.

Start with why.

Understanding why you’re doing something is the most important part of any project large or small. I have experience drawing out that information from people and using it to set goals and action items. This helps fine tune budget, risks, quick wins, and timelines.

I’ve had the privileged of leading teams up to 30 people across Canada, and locally in the same location. Empowering people to make decisions while always making myself available to review and bouce ideas off of has always helped the key members succeed and take the same appoach of unity throughout the group.

Project Management
Understand and Plan

Staying general has allowed my to understand what’s needed from multiple sides of a project. I’m able to effectivley communicate and Plan with Leadership Teams, Clients, Designers, Developers, Server Admins, and the Public.

Web Development
Server Side

With a strong knowledge of how coding works, it’s allowed me to learn server side languages as needed. Over the years I’ve primarily worked with PHP but also worked professionally with C#, C++, ASP, Ruby, PERL, Python, and others.

Web Design
Front End Development

I’ve primarily had the luxury of working alongside some great digital artists. My focus has been bringing their designs to life through W3C compliant HTML, CSS, and Javascript.

Frameworks
Work smarter not harder

With the addition of various frameworks, I’ve used bootstrap for responsive design since the early development, along with javascript frameworks like jQuery. With a strong understanding of how these frameworks work, I’m able to adapt as new ones launch on what seems like a daily basis.

My Career Story

Experience gained over the Years

Received Webmaster Engineer Degree

June  2003 to July 2004

I enrolled in the Webmaster Engineer degree program that aimed to teach a 4 year program in 1 year. The goal of this program was to teach all the different areas of the early online industry. During this time, I studied multiple programming languages  server environments, networking, hardware, project management, and graphic design.

I graduated in the top of my class with a 4.0 GPA and was on the Dean’s List.

Received Degree

Jan 2003 to Jan 2006

Joining Street Solutions was my first jump into full time employment in web design and development. I joined a team of about 12 working with stock data from the TSX. It was here I started working on early artificial intelligence, writing PERL scripts to collect public company reports automatically directly from their servers.

Joined cSeven Media

June 2006 to December 2006

I started with cSeven originally focused on server administration but eventually moved to development and customer care. I had a great relationship with the team and in particular, the owner of the company. With his advice, I stayed general in my skills and focused on my ability to build relationships with clients and help them with their challenges.

Joining Standard Broadcasting

January 2007 to November 2007

I joined Standard Broadcasting as a website support person working 12pm – 8pm to best server our radio stations in Alberta and British Columbia. I quickly made a name for myself working hard, learning everything I could about everything going on, and working on any project I could.

Purchased by Astral Media

November 2007 to September 2010

In November 2007, Astral Media’s purchase of Standard Broadcasting was completed and I officially joined their team. During this time, I took every opportunity I could, becoming the digital support lead, taking on quality assurance responsibilities, and eventually moving into a project management and leadership role as the Digital Content Lead for all of our radio station, now totalling 102 Canada wide.

New Brands and Opportunities

January 2008

As things settled down at Astral after the purchase and restructuring, I was the only remaining member of my once large team. It was at this time I started working more on content and looking at ways work with other groups and departments. I started working closely with our large brands like Virgin Radio, Radio NRJ, EzRock and others. It was also at this time I reached out to the HBO team leading to a company wide newsletter about my efforts bringing the groups together.

Site Launches in the Hundreds

November 2009

It was around 2009 I was involved in my 500th website launch. This included a full relaunch of our 102 radio station websites, launches of their self contained listen live player websites, rebrands and brand launches including Virgin Radio and Boom973. One of these projects had my team and I launching over 80 websites in a 3 month period from start to finish.

September 2010 – April 2015

Involved in a purchase once again, I was in a unique position of our department having more resources and properties than the company purchasing us. My responsibilties grew as great new team members joined and our website offering increased to over 130 including iconic brands like CHUM, TSN, and the Bounce.

September 2013

With Bell Media, the door was open to even more large national brands and after getting established, I started reaching out to different brand leaders and building new relationships. We quickly started working closely to cross-pollinate content with theLoop , CTV, TSN, BNN, and others. This caught the attention of the brand team and lead to me being involved in the launch for CraveTV.

April 2015 – May 2016

After spending so much of my career with large companies, I was ready for a change. After a few conversations, I joined back with C7 to focus on their client relationships and helping improve their products. I had the chance to work with large brands like the NBA, multiple charities, and medium sized businesses. This job was 100% remote and that was a very large change from what I was used to. I wore many hats and it was my first real experience working on my own.

Starting WebUpdate.ca

March 2016 – December 2017

After getting a taste of managing the day to day of a business with C7, I felt it was time to scratch the entrepreneurial itch I’d had for the past few years and go out on my own. WebUpdate.ca was built around the goal of helping people update their website if they didnt know how, or know where to start. I worked with many local and large brands and continue these relationships today.

May 2017

To get my companies name out in the wild, I was involved in may different networking events from being an active member of the Chamber of Commerce, going out to meetups, and BNI events. To help grow the brand further, I was the weather sponsor on a local radio station through a contra deal, I had my vehicle decaled with WebUpdate.ca branding, and multiple pieces of branded apparel. People still bring up my branding to this day.

Rejoining a Team with Sims Advertising

August 2017 – Present

After working on my own for 3 years, I was ready to either make the next move to getting an office, or joining up with a company. I came across Sims Advertising and did some research and things lined up very well. Over the past 2 years, I’ve helped grow their digital offering and currently run the digital department. Our clients include GE Appliances, TIMBERMART, Carrier Enterprise, GFL Environmental and more.

My Interests

Cooking and Food

I love to cook and try new things. Before getting into digital marketing, I trained as a chef and learned French fine dining, Italian, and traditional pub food. I always like bringing that love of food to work, organizing various food related events.

Technology

This goes hand and hand with my career. I love to try out new technology and I’m often an early adopter. I build custom PC’s, beta test software, and regularly update my hardware. I’m always looking for the next big thing.

Fitness

I never really excelled in traditional sports like Hockey or Baseball. In high school, I discovered body building. I shift intensity throughout the year. On average, you’ll see me working on this 3-4 times a week.
